Machine Operator-Second Shift

Oxford, NC

As a Second Shift BPU Machine Operator, you will run and maintain our biomass-to-biochar gasification system, keeping the unit operating safely and efficiently across the full production cycle. Day-to-day you will monitor system performance, respond to alarms and process conditions in real time, and perform routine maintenance to keep the unit running smoothly. You will work closely with your team lead and the incoming/outgoing shift operator to ensure smooth handoffs and continuous, safe operation. No prior gasification experience is required. We look for reliable, safety-minded individuals who are comfortable with industrial equipment and hands-on troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Run the BPU through its full operating cycle: start-up, gasification (normal operation), pause/restart, burndown, and cleanout
  • Monitor system dashboards, respond promptly to alarms, and perform routine troubleshooting
  • Load feedstock and offload the char bin 
  • Conduct daily visual checks of piping for leaks and wear
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures before any maintenance, servicing, or clearing of plugs
  • Assist with and/or perform scheduled maintenance
  • Maintain a clean, obstacle-free work area around the unit
  • Communicate clearly with the next shift on unit status, open issues, and maintenance needs
  • Accurately track production and maintenance data using a QR scan tracking system

Basic Qualifications

  • Personally invested in long term mission to move fast and fix how we work with carbon 
  • Thinks fast and adapts to changing conditions 
  • Personally invested in working safely and reliably in an industrial production environment  
  • Comfortable responding calmly and methodically to alarms or unexpected equipment conditions 
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to perform hands-on maintenance tasks
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to accurately and consistently track production data

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience operating industrial or process equipment (VFDs, PLCs, or similar controls)
  • Experience with routine mechanical maintenance: bearing greasing, valve servicing, basic hand tools
  • Familiarity with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
  • Experience working around combustible or pressurized systems
  • Prior experience in manufacturing, agriculture, or biomass processing environments
  • Forklift experience
  • Comfortable using QR code scanning or digital tracking systems

Additional Requirements

  • Must be willing to work on-site in Oxford, NC
  • Must be willing to work second shift hours: 2:30 PM–10:30 PM
  • Must pass background check
  • Must complete company-provided training and certification on the BPU system before operating independently
  • Ability to work near hot surfaces, moving machinery, and industrial noise levels with appropriate PPE (wear mask, gloves, and/or hearing protection)
